The U.S. travel and tourism sector experienced a significant resurgence in 2022, marking a pivotal year for recovery and growth. Recognizing the industry’s vital role as a key economic engine, the U.S. Department of Commerce has consistently prioritized its revitalization. In a move to further strengthen this commitment, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced the appointment of 32 distinguished leaders to the Travel and Tourism Advisory Board (TTAB). This board is entrusted with the crucial task of advising the Secretary on policies and programs that impact the travel and tourism industry across the United States, ensuring its sustainable expansion and contribution to the national economy.
Secretary Raimondo emphasized the industry’s robust comeback in 2022, stating, “Travel and tourism returned with force in 2022 as we opened up our country once again to visitors from around the globe.” She further highlighted the Commerce Department’s proactive measures to support the sector’s recovery since the Biden Administration’s inception. The U.S. Travel and Tourism Advisory Board, she noted, plays an indispensable role by offering expert recommendations and industry insights to enhance the American travel experience. The collaboration with both new and returning board members is eagerly anticipated to optimize strategies and address emerging challenges within the dynamic travel landscape.
Established in 2003, the TTAB has been re-chartered multiple times, consistently providing valuable counsel on a broad spectrum of critical issues. Past boards have significantly contributed to shaping policies related to travel facilitation, visa regulations, infrastructure development, aviation security enhancements, tourism research initiatives, and the crucial aspects of climate and economic sustainability. This demonstrates the board’s long-standing impact and its integral position in advising governmental approaches to travel and tourism.
The newly appointed members for the 2023-2024 term represent a diverse and experienced cohort from various sectors within the travel and tourism ecosystem. This includes leaders from state and regional economic development agencies, prominent businesses, and influential organizations. The comprehensive list of members includes notable figures such as Reggie Aggarwal, Founder and CEO of Cvent; Brian Chesky, Co-founder and CEO of Airbnb; Christine Duffy, President of Carnival Cruise Line; and Matt Goldberg, President and CEO of Tripadvisor, Inc., among many other accomplished individuals.
