Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) have fascinated the public for decades. With the increasing discovery of exoplanets, it’s tempting to imagine interstellar visitors navigating through our skies on their way to Earth. But what if the pilots of these UFOs aren’t aliens at all? What if they are us – our descendants from the future, who have mastered time and space travel? Perhaps these encounters with strange beings are glimpses of our own evolved future, with humans returning to study their evolutionary past.
The idea of UFOs being piloted by time-traveling humans isn’t new. A recent book, “Identified Flying Objects: A Multidisciplinary Scientific Approach to the UFO Phenomenon” (Masters Creative LLC, 2019), offers a compelling and thought-provoking exploration of this hypothesis.
A Multidisciplinary Investigation into Extratempestrials
Michael Masters, a professor of biological anthropology at Montana Technological University, authored the book. He proposes that, given the rapid advancements in science, technology, and engineering, future humans could likely develop the knowledge and technology needed to travel through time.
Masters aims to initiate a more informed dialogue between believers and skeptics. He explains that his multidisciplinary approach helps to understand the phenomenon. As scientists, he says that our job is to ask questions and find answers, adding that it’s important that we’re at the forefront of trying to find out what this is.
Extratempestrials: Our Future Selves?
Masters refers to these alleged visitors as “extratempestrials.” He highlights that close encounter accounts commonly describe UFO occupants as bipedal, hairless, and human-like beings with large brains and eyes, small noses and mouths. These beings also appear to communicate using our languages and possess technology that is advanced but clearly based on our own.
Masters believes that examining the consistent patterns of biocultural change in human evolution, alongside advancements in our understanding of time and time travel, could offer a new perspective on this unexplained phenomenon.

When asked why not argue that ET is a space traveler instead of a time traveler, Masters stated that we know humans exist and we have been on Earth for a very long time. He went on to say that humans will continue to exist with more advanced technology. He feels that time travel is the simplest and most likely explanation for UFOs.
Archaeological Tourism in Time?
Drawing from his experience directing archaeological digs in Africa, France, and the United States, Masters contemplates how much more we could learn about our evolutionary history if time travel were possible.
He says that alleged abduction accounts are scientific in nature. He thinks it may be future anthropologists, historians, and linguists who are gathering information. In addition, he thinks there is also a tourism element involved. There will be those who are willing to pay to see their favorite parts of history. He notes the popularity of the pyramids of Giza and Machu Picchu as tourist locations.
Masters acknowledges that his UFO research is still “an evolving project.” He adds that there are still missing pieces to the puzzle, particularly when it comes to time, quantum gravity, general relativity and quantum mechanics. He hopes that over time, we can continue to build on what we know with new scientific knowledge.
Differing Perspectives on the Time Traveler Hypothesis
Jan Harzan, the executive director of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), agrees with Masters’s multidisciplinary approach. He notes that UFOs are possibly time travelers and that this is one of the possibilities that MUFON is looking at. He adds that they know we are not alone and Masters makes a great case for the time-traveler hypothesis.

Not everyone shares this enthusiasm. Robert Sheaffer, a UFO skeptic, dismisses the book because it depends on the belief that “time travel” is not only possible, but real. Sheaffer argues that Masters takes witness accounts too literally and that the claim that spinning something fast enough will warp space is dubious.
David Darling, a British astronomer and science writer, says that if UFOs are alien crafts, that they might be time machines from our future than spacecraft from other stars. Darling adds that credible evidence for the existence of flying saucers and aliens is lacking. He feels there is no need for such a thesis to begin with.

Larry Lemke, a retired NASA aerospace engineer, finds the idea of time-traveling visitors intriguing. He notes that UFOs don’t seem to obey the laws of aerodynamics and Newtonian mechanics.
He adds Einstein’s theory of general relativity with wormholes and black holes, as well as the Alcubierre warp-drive bubble into the mix. Lemke adds that certain phenomena around UFOs look exactly like general relativity effects and that missing time is a very common one.

According to Lemke, the idea that someone has discovered how to manipulate space-time explains a lot about the UFO phenomenon. He says that no matter how much knowledge we have, there is always something beyond.
