However, in my experience, smaller cities or those primarily featuring outdoor attractions are generally more enjoyable in the warmer, drier months.

Ensure there are ample indoor activities available in case of rain. If you enjoy outdoor pursuits, are you prepared to handle colder temperatures and potential rain showers? Or would you prefer a southern European city with a higher probability of sunny days?

Cyprus enjoys a more typical Mediterranean climate than the Canary Islands, but its eastern Mediterranean position ensures long summers. While 2023 saw unusually high temperatures in early November, evenings – and mountain areas! – will feel more autumnal.

Wander through the streets for uncrowded sightseeing, admire the panoramic views from Fisherman’s Bastion, and cross the Chain Bridge from Buda to Pest. Then, embrace the cool (but not freezing) temperatures with a dip in the warm, steamy outdoor thermal baths!

The Beaujolais wine region isn’t a city per se, but this November event is so significant that it deserves inclusion in this list of best places to travel in November in Europe. Moreover, nearby Lyon is often considered the culinary capital of France. All the more reason to plan a November visit.

The third Thursday of November at midnight marks the release of the young Beaujolais Nouveau wine. While ‘Nouveau’ day briefly lost popularity a few years ago, this wine region now fully merits exploration.

You might be wondering about other wonderful cities, also warm places in November in Europe, that I’ve omitted. Here are three favorites, with the caveat that weather can be unpredictable. You might be lucky – or you might not!

Rome, Italy

It’s one of my most beloved cities globally for its iconic sights, pizza, and gelato. However, Rome’s average rainfall in November is significant, around 130 mm over 15 days, making it possibly its wettest month. Temperatures remain mild, but many of Rome’s main attractions—the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain—are outdoors, and they are best enjoyed on a dry day.

Barcelona, Spain

Beautiful Barcelona has less average rainfall than Rome in November. Statistics suggest it receives less rain in November than in September or October, averaging 43 mm over 5 days. However, many of Barcelona’s highlights are its stunning and fun Gaudi buildings, and truly appreciating them requires being outdoors. Plus, Barcelona is a seaside city; if you have the choice, spring or summer is ideal for also enjoying the beaches.

Lisbon, Portugal
