OAK ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE: An Unforgettable Climb

Plan Your Activities in The Brunswick Islands, North Carolina

Our Brunswick adventure commenced with a visit to the Oak Island Lighthouse, completed in 1958 and the last lighthouse erected in North Carolina. This isn’t your average lighthouse climb; it’s an exhilarating experience that earns you bragging rights (and perhaps an “I climbed the Oak Island Lighthouse” t-shirt!). Who knew ascending a lighthouse could be so adventurous? Prepare for a thrilling ascent!

After conquering the Oak Island Lighthouse, every other lighthouse climb will feel like a breeze. Ascending 131 “steps” via ship’s ladders to reach the observation platform is no small feat. Unlike typical lighthouses with spiral staircases, Oak Island offers a unique, adrenaline-pumping climb, rewarded by breathtaking panoramic views. From the summit, capture stunning aerial perspectives of Oak Island and ocean vistas that resemble a living masterpiece.

The tour extends beyond just the climb. It’s an enriching experience filled with fascinating lighthouse facts. I learned that lighthouses are identified by their unique flashing patterns, crucial for seafaring navigation. And because lights are less visible during daylight, each lighthouse boasts a distinctive color scheme, ensuring no two are alike.

The iconic Oak Island Lighthouse is a treasure owned by the Town of Caswell Beach and lovingly maintained by dedicated volunteers.

The view from the top truly justifies the climb, wouldn’t you agree?

Essential Information for Your Visit:

• Wear closed-toe shoes with rubber soles for safety and grip.
• Climbers must be at least nine years old.
• Top tour reservations are required at least two weeks in advance.
• Tours are offered free of charge.

OAK ISLAND BEACH PIER: A Coastal Landmark

Our itinerary included a visit to the Oak Island Beach Pier, undergoing reconstruction at the time. While we could only admire it from below (reopening was slated for May 2019), it’s undoubtedly a focal point of Oak Island. Oak Island Beach epitomizes the idyllic beach scene: visitors cruising on bikes with melting ice cream cones and dogs joyfully chasing frisbees.

Oak Island Beach has been rightfully recognized as one of North Carolina’s premier beaches by US News & World Report and USA Today 10Best. Unlike many beaches on “best beach” lists, Oak Island remains wonderfully uncrowded. No need for predawn wake-up calls to secure your spot on the sand here!

Dog-Friendly Oak Island:

• Oak Island warmly welcomes dogs, offering designated off-leash areas for canine frolics.
• You might witness sea turtle protection efforts, as loggerhead sea turtles frequently nest on these shores.

Oak Island Dining Highlights:

Southport, NC: Step into a Movie Scene

Movie buffs, take note: Southport, NC should be at the top of your Brunswick Islands itinerary. Stepping into Southport feels like walking onto a real movie set. Its picturesque charm and natural beauty have made it a favored filming location for numerous productions, including A Walk to Remember, Safe Haven, Weekend at Bernie’s, Domestic Disturbance, Dawson’s Creek, Revenge, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Secret Life of Bees, Nights in Rodanthe, and many more!

Southport Fun Tours: Uncover Local Gems

Movies filmed in Southport Nc: Lights, Camera, Action!

Is it any wonder Southport is often called “America’s happiest seaside town?” Despite its cinematic fame, Southport retains its intimate “small-town feel.” During our tour with a local guide, residents warmly waved from their porches, engaging in friendly banter. Jokes were exchanged, and a palpable sense of community was evident. The Brunswick Islands, in general, are home to some of the most genuinely kind people I’ve ever encountered.

A Southport Fun Tour is an absolute must. Living up to their name, these tours are not only entertaining but also provide a condensed yet comprehensive overview of Southport’s rich history and key landmarks. Local storytellers bring the town’s past to life with captivating narratives, including a few “off-the-record” anecdotes that might just make their way into my video (oops!).

Movie aficionados might recognize the adorable Grey Burriss house as Alex’s residence from Safe Haven.

Fishy Fishy Cafe: Waterfront Dining in Southport

Fishy Fishy Cafe has won me over on two separate occasions, with the second visit being just as delightful as the first. This waterfront gem is the ideal dinner spot to savor breathtaking sunset views. Relax on the patio, cocktail in hand, and soak in the scenery of the historic yacht basin and marsh while enjoying live music. Notably, Fishy Fishy Cafe played the role of Jack’s Stowaway Tavern in the television series Revenge.

Sunrise Coffee: Beach Bliss

One of the greatest joys of a beach vacation is greeting the sunrise. Before bed, check Google for sunrise times, set your alarm, brew some coffee, and step out to witness nature’s spectacle.

COFFEE AT SUNRISE: A Morning Ritual

Sunrise hours are perfect for a tranquil beach walk, seashell collecting, or spotting sea turtle nesting tracks. A major draw of the Brunswick Islands is the uncrowded beaches. The morning beach atmosphere is serene and peaceful. I experienced the best of both worlds – the moon lingering over the ocean as the sun gradually ascended. The beach was deserted except for my footprints. Imagine waking up to this vista daily. Pure bliss.

Inject some adrenaline into your beach vacation with an adventure at Shallotte River Swamp Park! Shallotte River Swamp Park celebrates the natural beauty of its surroundings. “We do not sacrifice our surroundings for adventure, but rather cautiously enhance the experience by weaving the two together.” The tour was not only exhilarating but also educational, offering insights into the local habitat and prime viewing opportunities for swamp creatures.

Kindred Spirit Mailbox: Letters to the Ocean

A bike ride to the Kindred Spirit Mailbox on Bird Island is a must-do in the Brunswick Islands. Fans of Nicholas Sparks’s Every Breath will recognize its magic.

BIKE TO THE KINDRED SPIRIT MAILBOX ON BIRD ISLAND: A Pilgrimage of Words

The “Kindred Spirit” mailbox, a solitary beacon, holds notebooks and pens for visitors to record thoughts, prayers, dreams, and reflections. Established in 1981 by a couple strolling on secluded Bird Island, it’s now filled with heartfelt letters from around the globe. These letters are open for anyone to read and contribute to.

“The destiny that matters most in anyone’s life concerns love.” This quote, discovered by Nicholas Sparks in the mailbox, inspired his novel as he sought out the author of those poignant words.

Kindred Spirit Mailbox Tips:

Bird Island is a pristine 1,300-acre secluded beach, devoid of buildings, save for the iconic mailbox.
• Locate the mailbox by spotting the flagpole with the American flag.
• Rent bikes from Island Hoppers Bicycle for the quintessential beach cruising experience to the mailbox!
• Watch for pelicans soaring overhead!

Departure day blues were slightly eased by a stop at Drift Coffee & Kitchen in Ocean Isle Beach. Highly recommended, Drift Coffee boasts a rustic beach vibe, reminiscent of Hawaiian cafes.
