Can a Dog Travel on Amtrak? A Comprehensive Guide to Amtrak’s Pet Policy

Amtrak and the Los Angeles – San Diego – San Luis Obispo (LOSSAN) Rail Corridor Agency have made it easier for pet owners to travel with their furry friends on the Pacific Surfliner route. The pet program, now in effect, allows passengers to bring their dogs and cats onboard, provided they meet specific requirements.

“We’re always looking for ways to better serve the needs of our passengers, and allowing pets to come along for the ride is something our customers have expressed a strong interest in,” said Jason Jewell, Interim Managing Director of the LOSSAN Agency.

Understanding Amtrak’s Pet Policy: Key Requirements

Amtrak’s pet policy, while welcoming, has specific guidelines to ensure a comfortable and safe journey for all passengers, including those with and without pets. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Weight Limit: Your dog or cat must weigh 20 pounds or less (including the carrier).
  • Pet Fee: A fee of $26 or 800 Amtrak Guest Reward points applies for each pet traveling on the Pacific Surfliner.
  • Reservations: A limited number of pet reservations are available on each train, so booking in advance is essential. Each customer is limited to one pet reservation per trip.
  • Carrier Requirements: Pets must remain in a carrier at all times, and the carrier must fit comfortably under the seat.

Where are Pets Allowed on Amtrak?

Pets are welcome in most cars on the Pacific Surfliner, with a few exceptions:

  • Prohibited Areas: Pets are not allowed in Business Class or the Café car.
  • Allowed Areas: Pets are allowed in all other cars as long as they remain in their carriers and under the seat.

This policy ensures that all passengers have access to amenities and that those with allergies or other concerns can avoid close proximity to animals.

Amtrak’s Focus on Accessibility and Comfort

Amtrak’s decision to expand its pet program reflects a broader commitment to passenger satisfaction. “Nobody likes to be left behind, which is why we are pleased to expand Amtrak’s pet program to Pacific Surfliner trains,” said Jeanne Cantu, Amtrak Vice President, California.

The Pacific Surfliner route itself offers a scenic and convenient travel option, stretching 351 miles through Southern California.

The trains feature comfortable seating, power outlets, Wi-Fi, and a Market Café, making for an enjoyable travel experience for both humans and their four-legged companions. The route travels through San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo counties.

Important Forms and Agreements

Before traveling with your pet on Amtrak, it’s essential to review and sign the required documentation:

  • Pet Release and Indemnification Agreement: All customers must read and sign this agreement for each travel segment to confirm pet eligibility. You can find the agreement on Amtrak’s website.

Service Animals

It’s important to note that Amtrak continues to welcome service animals on board at no charge. Service animals are not subject to the same restrictions as pets and are allowed in all areas of the train.

Preparing for Your Trip

Before embarking on your journey, remember to:

  • Book in Advance: Pet reservations are limited, so book as early as possible.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring food, water, and any necessary supplies for your pet.
  • Acclimate Your Pet: Ensure your pet is comfortable in its carrier before the trip.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience for you and your furry friend on Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner. For more information, visit Amtrak.com/pets.
