Belize Travel Advisory: Exercise Increased Caution Due to Crime

Exercise increased caution in Belize due to crime. Some areas have increased risk. Please read the entire Travel Advisory.

Belize, while known for its beautiful Caribbean coast and Mayan ruins, presents safety challenges for travelers. Violent crime, including sexual assault, home invasions, armed robberies, and murder, is prevalent throughout the country, even in broad daylight and tourist hotspots. A significant portion of this violence is attributed to gang activity.

Travelers should be particularly vigilant in the south side of Belize City due to high crime rates. It’s important to note that local law enforcement agencies often lack the necessary resources and training to effectively respond to serious crimes, leading to many cases remaining unresolved and unprosecuted.

Belize City – Level 3: Reconsider Travel

Travelers should reconsider travel to Belize City. A significant portion of Belize’s violent crime occurs in the Southside area of Belize City, which is largely gang-related. This high-risk zone is geographically defined as south of Haulover Creek Canal and extending south to Fabers Road. While this area is distinct from typical tourist zones, all visitors to Belize City should maintain heightened situational awareness, exercise increased caution, and consistently practice robust safety and security measures throughout their visit.
