Your Guide to Frontier Airlines’ Pet Travel Policy: Fly with Your Furry Friend!

Traveling with your pet can be an exciting adventure, and at Frontier Airlines, we understand that pets are part of the family. We are dedicated to ensuring your dogs, cats, and other small companions travel safely and comfortably. Planning to bring your beloved critter on your next journey? Here’s what you need to know about the Frontier Pet Travel Policy to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your animal companion.

Want to include your pet in your booking from the start or add them to an existing reservation? You can find out how here.

Before you finalize your travel plans with your pet, it’s important to be aware of several key aspects of our pet policy.

  • A one-way directional pet fee is applicable and can be conveniently paid online during your booking process. If you choose not to pay in advance, you can settle the fee when you check in with your pet at the airport. Remember, when traveling with a pet, you are also permitted to bring either one personal item (measuring 8”H x 14”W x 18”L) OR one carry-on bag (measuring 10”H x 16”W x 24”L). If you require a carry-on bag in addition to your pet container, an extra charge will apply.
  • Please be aware that Frontier Airlines does not permit pets to be checked as baggage in the cargo hold.
  • It is crucial to familiarize yourself with and comply with all relevant laws, customs regulations, and governmental requirements of the country, state, or territory you are traveling to with your animal. This responsibility rests solely with you, the pet owner. Don’t forget to obtain all necessary health documents for your pet before your travel date.
  • For your pet’s comfort during the flight, we recommend withholding food and water for about four hours leading up to your scheduled departure time.

Frontier Travel Tip: To make your travel preparations easier, check the specific animal requirements of your destination state. Some states mandate health certificates, while others may not. Knowing these details in advance can save you time and hassle!

When it comes to cabin pet travel, there are specific guidelines to follow to ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers, including your pet.

  • Only certain types of domesticated animals are permitted to travel in the cabin.

  • Domesticated dogs and cats must be at least 8 weeks old to travel.

  • Within the United States, we accept domesticated dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and small household birds in the cabin.

  • Please note, the following animals are strictly prohibited from cabin travel: Large birds such as parrots, macaws, cockatoos, and birds of prey; rodents including mice, rats, and squirrels; beavers, ferrets, reptiles (including snakes), amphibians, spiders, and insects. And just to be clear, lions, tigers, or bears are not allowed.

  • Pets are welcome in the cabin on all domestic Frontier Airlines flights.

  • For safety and logistical reasons, passengers traveling with a pet will not be assigned seats in the first row or in an exit row.

  • Your pet must remain securely inside its travel container throughout the entire flight. If your pet becomes disruptive, it is your responsibility to calm them without removing them from their carrier. Important Note: While you may want to comfort your pet by taking them out of the carrier, veterinary professionals generally advise against sedating pets for air travel. The effects of sedatives at high altitudes can be unpredictable and potentially harmful to animals.

  • We kindly request that you refrain from feeding or giving water to your pet while on board the aircraft. The stress of travel, combined with the motion of the plane and other environmental factors, can easily upset your pet’s stomach.

  • Important Note: In the event of an emergency, supplemental oxygen will not be administered to pets.

  • To ensure a pleasant flight for everyone, your pet must be harmless, non-disruptive, odorless, and require no attention from you during the flight.

The travel container is a critical component for ensuring your pet’s safety and comfort during the flight. It’s essential to choose the right carrier and adhere to our guidelines.

  • The pet travel container must be adequately sized to allow your pet to stand up, turn around, and lie down in a natural position. We want your pet to be as comfortable as possible during the journey! The carrier must also fit completely beneath the seat in front of you. While most seats can accommodate standard pet carriers, there may be certain seat locations that are not suitable. Our airport staff will assist you in finding an appropriate seat assignment with sufficient under-seat space.
  • The maximum acceptable dimensions for a pet container are 18 inches in length, 14 inches in width, and 8 inches in height.
  • While not mandatory, we highly recommend using a soft-sided pet carrier as they are generally more flexible and easier to fit under the seats.
  • Your pet is required to stay inside its container at all times while in the airport and on the aircraft.

Pet Health and Wellness Guidelines

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) sets the regulations for pet transportation within the U.S. For pets traveling in the cabin on domestic flights within the United States, Frontier Airlines does not mandate a health certificate. However, it is important to note that upon arrival, the state you are landing in may have its own specific requirements for pet health documentation. To clarify whether a health certificate is needed for your destination, we advise contacting your veterinarian or consulting the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Services website.

For international travel involving service animals, a health certificate is mandatory. Furthermore, each country may impose specific vaccination requirements that go beyond general guidelines. For detailed information regarding specific disease vaccinations required for your destination country, please contact the respective consulate.

International Travel Restrictions for Pets and Service Animals

Currently, Frontier Airlines is not accepting any new pet reservations for international travel. For international flights, we exclusively accommodate service animals, and these are subject to specific requirements and documentation.

Requirements for International Travel with Service Dogs:
  • All service dogs traveling internationally must have a CDC Dog Import Form receipt.
  • Service dogs must be at least 6 months of age or older.
  • Upon arrival, the service dog must appear healthy.
  • Proof of a microchip that is compatible with a universal scanner is required.
Additional Requirements for Service Dogs from High-Risk Countries:

Service dogs originating from countries classified as high-risk for rabies must fulfill additional documentation requirements. This includes uploading a photograph of the service dog and obtaining government-endorsed veterinary documentation. For comprehensive details, please visit the CDC’s website.

Here are some important details regarding your pet’s health certificate, which may be required depending on your destination and travel circumstances.

  • The health certificate’s validity is date-sensitive and depends on the country of entry:

    • For entry into Puerto Rico, the health certificate must be dated within 30 days of arrival.
    • For entry into the U.S. mainland, the health certificate must be dated within 10 days of arrival.
  • Mandatory information to be included in the health certificate:

    • The full name and address of the pet owner.
    • The animal species.
    • The country of origin and destination.
    • Proof of rabies immunization is required for adult pets aged 3 months and older for all destinations except Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico defines adult pets as 4 months of age and older. Rabies immunization must be administered within 12 months for all destinations, except Puerto Rico, which requires it within 6 months. Important Note: The rabies vaccine must be administered no more than one year and no less than 30 days before international travel. If a pet receives a rabies booster less than 30 days prior to an international flight, documentation of the previous rabies vaccination is necessary.
  • Country-Specific Requirements:

    • The following vaccinations are recommended for pets: hepatitis, PIP (Parainfluenza, Infectious Tracheobronchitis, Parvovirus), and leptospirosis.
    • Puerto Rico mandates that pets wear a sturdy collar and two identification tags. These tags should include both your permanent address and telephone number, as well as contact information (address and phone number) where you can be reached while traveling.
    • All service animals (dogs) traveling to and from Canada are required to have both a rabies vaccination and a health certificate.
      • The rabies vaccination certificate must be issued in English or French by a licensed veterinarian from the country of origin. There is no waiting period required after vaccination. Canada recognizes the three-year rabies vaccine; however, if the validity date is not explicitly stated on the certificate, it will be considered a one-year vaccination.
      • The health certificate must also be in English or French and completed by a licensed veterinarian. It should clearly identify the animal, include vaccination dates, the vaccine manufacturer, and the expiration date of the rabies vaccine.
      • In addition to all other required documentation, confirmation of parasitic treatment must be included in the health certificate for service animals traveling to Canada.

Puerto Rico Entry Requirements:

Every animal traveling to or from Puerto Rico, including service animals, must have an official health certificate that is valid for 30 days from the date of travel.

The health certificate must affirm the following:

  • Confirmation that the animal did not originate from an area quarantined for rabies. The official veterinary inspection certificate must be signed by an accredited veterinarian in the state or territory of origin and remains valid for 30 days from the inspection date.
  • Certification of rabies vaccination administered within six months prior to travel for pets older than four months.
  • Documentation of external parasite treatment administered within 72 hours before entry, certified on the health certificate by the accredited veterinarian.
  • Official individual identification for the pet, which can be a microchip or a collar with a metallic ID tag.

U.S. Virgin Islands Entry Requirements:

For dogs and cats traveling in the cabin to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands, in addition to standard domestic travel requirements, all pets (including service animals) must have:

  • A health certificate verifying that the animal did not originate from a rabies-quarantined area.
  • Proof of rabies vaccination administered within six months of the travel date. This requirement is waived for dogs and cats younger than 12 weeks old.
  • While not mandatory, identification of ownership, including address and phone number, is highly recommended.
