Pilot Travel Centers: A Legacy of Fueling America’s Journeys

Pilot Corporation has officially finalized the sale of its remaining 20% stake in Pilot Travel Centers to Berkshire Hathaway Inc., marking a significant milestone for the company founded by Jim Haslam II in 1958. From its humble beginnings as a single gas station in Gate City, Virginia, Pilot Travel Centers has grown into the leading travel center operator in North America. This transition signifies the culmination of decades of expansion and service within the travel industry.

For over six decades, Pilot Travel Centers has been a vital part of the American travel landscape. The company’s growth is attributed to both organic expansion and strategic acquisitions, incorporating brands like Marathon Ashland Petroleum, Williams, Speedway, Mr. Fuel, and Speedway-Wilco into its network. A pivotal moment in its history was the merger with Flying J in 2010, which significantly broadened its reach and service offerings. Today, Pilot Travel Centers boasts an impressive network of over 750 locations spanning 44 U.S. states and six Canadian provinces. These centers cater to millions of travelers and professional drivers, selling approximately 14 billion gallons of fuel annually, alongside $3 billion in food and merchandise, underscoring its critical role in keeping North America moving.

Jim Haslam II, the visionary founder of Pilot Travel Centers, reflected on the company’s journey: “Pilot started with one gas station 65 years ago, and because of the dedicated and exceptional team members we have had throughout our history, it is now an industry leader.” He acknowledged the emotional weight of this decision for his family, emphasizing it was the appropriate step at this juncture. The Haslam family remains committed to Knoxville, Tennessee, their long-standing home, and will continue their philanthropic endeavors within the region.

Jimmy Haslam, CEO and Chairman of Pilot Corporation, also shared his gratitude: “As a family business, it is humbling to think of all of the team members who have been a part of Pilot Flying J and we are beyond grateful for their commitment and contributions over the years.” He extended appreciation to guests, professional drivers, and trucking companies who have been integral to Pilot Flying J’s evolution over the past sixty years. Looking forward, the Haslam family expresses their best wishes for the continued success of the Pilot Flying J team as they advance the travel center network across North America.

This sale represents not just a business transaction, but the passing of a family legacy within the travel center industry. Pilot Travel Centers stands as a testament to growth, adaptation, and unwavering commitment to serving travelers and the transportation sector across the continent.
