Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of PERC, addresses the crowd during a grand opening ceremony for the Pride Travel Center, highlighting the importance of propane autogas and other clean energy solutions for the future of transportation.
As the global conversation around sustainable energy intensifies, the travel industry is witnessing a significant shift towards embracing alternative fuel sources. Catering to this growing demand, the United States has welcomed its first multi-alternative fuel travel center in Hartford, Connecticut – the Pride Hartford Travel Center. This innovative facility is setting a new benchmark for eco-conscious travel and fleet operations.
A First-of-Its-Kind Fueling Hub
Located strategically off I-91, the Pride Hartford Travel Center spans across a 7-acre area, designed to accommodate both personal vehicles and large commercial trucks. This pioneering travel center offers a comprehensive range of fueling options. For everyday commuters, there are 12 covered fueling bays, while professional drivers will find eight covered bays specifically designed for large trucks. Beyond traditional gasoline and diesel, the Pride Hartford Travel Center distinguishes itself by providing a diverse portfolio of alternative fuels, including Tesla Supercharger stations, a hydrogen fueling station, and two DC fast-charging EV stations for non-Tesla electric vehicles. Looking ahead, the center is also prepared for the integration of compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling infrastructure, as reported by the Hartford Courant, solidifying its commitment to future-proof energy solutions.
Craig Peters, representing Capitol Clean Cities of Connecticut, emphasized the groundbreaking nature of this facility at the grand opening. According to local news coverage, he stated, “This Pride Travel Center is the first travel center in the United States to offer these three clean alternative fuels: which include, hydrogen, propane, DC fast chargers, and Tesla SuperChargers as well.” This statement underscores the unique position of the Pride Hartford Travel Center as a leader in the alternative fuel landscape.
Embracing Clean Energy: The Alternative Fuel Lineup
The grand opening event showcased a variety of vehicles powered by these alternative fuels, including the hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai, highlighting the practical applications of these cleaner energy sources.
Electric Vehicle Charging
Recognizing the increasing adoption of electric vehicles, the Pride Hartford Travel Center provides both Tesla Superchargers and universal DC fast-charging stations. This dual offering ensures that both Tesla owners and drivers of other EV brands can conveniently and quickly recharge their vehicles while on the move. This infrastructure is crucial in supporting the growing EV market and encouraging long-distance electric travel.
Hydrogen Fueling
The inclusion of a hydrogen fueling station positions the Pride Hartford Travel Center at the forefront of hydrogen technology adoption in transportation. Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, like the Toyota Mirai showcased at the opening, offer a compelling zero-emission alternative to gasoline vehicles, with quick refueling times and extended driving ranges. This addition signals a forward-thinking approach to diverse clean energy solutions.
Propane Autogas: A Focus on Fleets
Propane autogas is another key alternative fuel offered at the Pride Hartford Travel Center, with a particular focus on serving fleet vehicles. During the grand opening, propane autogas vehicles from prominent organizations such as Nestlé Waters, Yale University, and Simsbury Public Schools were displayed, alongside state-of-the-art propane infrastructure provided by Superior Energy Systems (SES). The advanced 18,000-gallon propane tank and dispenser system from SES includes sophisticated software that tracks critical data such as driver and vehicle identification, mileage, and gallons pumped. This technology offers significant convenience and efficiency for fleet management.
Jim Bunsey, Director of Operations for Superior Energy Systems, highlighted the increasing popularity of propane autogas in fleet operations: “Over the past five years, we have seen substantial growth of work truck fleets utilizing propane to significantly lower their emissions, thanks in large part to the success of cloud-based fleet management software. By providing users with convenient, affordable, and reliable refueling, it’s never been easier for fleets to take advantage of this ideal energy source for clean transportation.”
The environmental benefits of propane autogas are substantial. Today’s propane autogas engines produce ultra-low nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, achieving levels 90% cleaner than EPA standards and reducing NOx emissions by 96% compared to even the cleanest diesel engines. These near-zero emission levels make propane autogas an attractive option for fleet owners aiming to minimize their environmental impact and improve air quality.
Tucker Perkins, president and CEO of the Propane Education & Research Council, emphasized the strategic role of propane autogas in achieving broader emissions reduction goals: “Propane autogas plays a critical role in clean transportation, and the addition of this essential energy source at the Pride Travel Center underscores the vital position propane autogas has in achieving net-zero emissions goals. This is especially true for medium-duty fleet owners looking for an alternative energy that can improve air quality without sacrificing on range, payload, or torque.”
Why Pride Hartford Travel Center Matters for Travelers
The Pride Hartford Travel Center is more than just a fueling station; it represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future for travel. By offering a variety of alternative fuel options in one convenient location, it caters to the diverse needs of today’s travelers and fleet operators. Whether you are driving an electric vehicle, a hydrogen fuel cell car, or a propane-powered truck, this travel center provides accessible and reliable refueling solutions. It not only supports the adoption of cleaner energy but also positions Hartford, Connecticut, as a forward-thinking hub in the evolving landscape of sustainable transportation. As the demand for alternative fuels continues to rise, facilities like the Pride Hartford Travel Center will play a crucial role in shaping the future of travel and logistics.
