Navigating Travel in Uncertain Times: Why Travel Insurance Through AAA is More Important Than Ever

The global travel landscape has been undeniably reshaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. As we adapt to this new normal, travelers are not only reconsidering their destinations but also how they plan and protect their journeys. A recent AAA Travel survey reveals a significant shift in traveler behavior: over half of American adults (55%) are planning a vacation involving an overnight stay before the end of next year, and a growing number of these individuals are recognizing the crucial role of travel insurance to safeguard their investments.

The survey highlights a compelling statistic: a third (31%) of U.S. travelers express an increased likelihood of purchasing travel insurance for trips planned between now and the close of 2022, specifically due to the ongoing pandemic. This heightened interest underscores a significant change in traveler priorities, with protection taking center stage.

Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, emphasizes this evolving perspective: “Travel insurance is a relatively small price to pay for the significant peace of mind it provides, and that peace of mind is invaluable in the current climate.” She further notes, “Americans have witnessed firsthand the importance of travel insurance in protecting their vacation investments and are now prioritizing this purchase right from the outset, more than ever before.”

When it comes to the benefits that travelers value most in travel insurance, the ability to cancel a trip and receive a refund tops the list. An impressive 69% of travelers cite this as the most critical factor when considering travel insurance for an upcoming trip. AAA advises these travelers to specifically seek out travel insurance policies that offer a “cancel for any reason” component. This type of coverage provides greater flexibility and protection should unforeseen circumstances necessitate trip cancellation.

Historically, standard travel insurance policies often excluded coverage for epidemics or pandemics. However, recognizing the evolving needs and expectations of consumers, some providers have adapted and now offer plans that extend coverage to certain losses arising from COVID-19 or other epidemic diseases. To navigate these increasingly complex options, AAA strongly recommends that travelers consult with a knowledgeable travel agent. These experts can provide invaluable guidance in planning trips and evaluating the diverse range of travel insurance options available in the market, including Travel Insurance Through Aaa.

AAA Travel has observed a substantial increase in bookings, with recent figures showing an 11% rise compared to 2019 levels. This resurgence in travel interest is mirrored by a surge in travel insurance sales. AAA’s travel insurance sales have experienced double-digit year-over-year growth, demonstrating that as members return to travel, they are keenly aware of the value of protecting their investments. Selecting the right policy is paramount, and travelers are increasingly seeking comprehensive coverage that protects against common reasons for trip cancellations and interruptions, as well as other potential travel-related incidents. These incidents can include change fees, delays, or lost and damaged luggage, to name just a few.

Furthermore, it’s crucial to be aware that some international destinations now mandate that visitors possess travel insurance to cover any unexpected medical expenses that may arise during their stay. A proficient travel agent can expertly guide travelers through these and other evolving travel requirements, ensuring they are adequately prepared.

The AAA Travel survey also highlights the continued value travelers place on professional guidance. Six in ten Americans (60%) recognize the benefits of working with a travel agent to plan their upcoming trips. The top reasons cited for this preference underscore the vital role travel advisors play in today’s more intricate travel environment:

  • Saving Time on Research and Planning (40%): Travel agents streamline the often-time-consuming process of vacation planning.
  • Assistance with Complex Travel Restrictions and Requirements (34%): Navigating the ever-changing landscape of travel regulations can be challenging, and agents provide essential support.
  • Finding the Best Deals (33%): Travel agents have access to resources and expertise to identify cost-effective travel options.

“Travel insurance options can be overwhelming in their variety and complexity. This is where a knowledgeable travel agent proves invaluable, helping you navigate these intricacies,” adds Twidale. “A trusted travel advisor acts as your advocate both before and during your trip. By partnering with a travel advisor to review your travel insurance options, you gain an extra layer of protection, allowing you to concentrate on creating lasting vacation memories.”

AAA Travel agents stand ready to assist members in evaluating travel insurance offerings and planning their vacations whenever they are ready to embark on their next adventure. For more information and to begin planning, visit AAA.com/Travel and explore travel insurance through AAA.

The survey referenced was conducted between August 13–15, 2021, utilizing a probability-based panel representative of the U.S. household population. This panel encompasses approximately 97% of U.S. households. The majority of surveys were completed online, with accommodations made for consumers without internet access to participate via phone. A total of 1,126 interviews were conducted with U.S. adults aged 18 and older. The margin of error for the overall study is 2.9% at a 95% confidence level, while for U.S. travelers, it is 3.9% at the same confidence level. It’s important to note that smaller subgroups may have larger error margins.
