As a seasoned traveler, being prepared for unpredictable weather is always top of mind, and that often starts from the ground up. Like many, I meticulously plan trips during dry seasons, constantly monitor weather forecasts, and always have indoor activities as backup plans. However, rain is sometimes an unavoidable part of the adventure. That’s where Waterproof Travel Shoes become essential, eliminating the need to pack bulky rain boots along with your regular sneakers.
But do waterproof travel shoes really live up to the hype? Based on my experiences, including a particularly rainy road trip with my Vessi shoes, the answer is a resounding yes.

Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes: Initial Thoughts
When my first pair of Vessi shoes arrived, my initial thought was simply, “These look great.” I had chosen the Weekend Chelsea boot-sneakers in black, eager to put Vessi’s claims of water-repellency, stormproof construction, and suitability for wet weather to the test.
After reading the information card in the box and examining the rubber sole and sleek waterproof material, I slipped them on. They were exactly what I was hoping for: minimalist, boot-style sneakers that were missing from my wardrobe – and importantly, they were promised to be 100% waterproof travel shoes.
My partner, Dan, opted for the Men’s Weekend Vessi shoes in white. He was equally pleased with his classic white sneakers that offered the added benefit of a rainproof fabric. We were both excited to try out our new waterproof travel shoes on our upcoming summer trip, hoping for (or perhaps not hoping for!) some rain to truly test them. He even thinks they are a stylish shoe choice for dads, and I agree – versatile and practical!

Solving the Travel Shoe Dilemma with Waterproof Footwear
For years, selecting the right shoes for a trip has been a source of “analysis paralysis” for me. I’ve even written a comprehensive guide on choosing the best travel shoes for women – the struggle is real!
My ideal travel shoe needs to check many boxes: stylish enough for photos, supportive for long city walks, suitable for light hiking, and, of course, prepared for any weather conditions. Rain-soaked sneakers are a travel nightmare. I’ve experienced having to leave shoes in the sun for a full day to dry, which severely limits your footwear options and can turn exploring a new city into an uncomfortable experience if you’re stuck with flip-flops or hiking boots as alternatives.
Vessi waterproof travel shoes solve this problem perfectly. They are stylish and ready to handle unexpected rainstorms, downpours, or even slush. Having accumulated a few pairs of Vessi shoes now, I can confidently share my detailed experience in this review.

Why I Chose Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes
I initially chose the Vessi Weekend Chelsea shoes primarily for their aesthetic appeal. I’ve tested them with various outfits – dresses, jean shorts, leggings, pants, and joggers – and found them incredibly versatile. They are easy to slip on and off and complement almost any casual travel outfit.
One of my main criteria when selecting travel shoes is avoiding footwear that looks unflattering in photos. Vacation photos are lasting memories, and regretting shoe choices in those pictures is something I actively try to avoid. Running shoes, while comfortable, can sometimes look out of place with certain outfits.
Vessi shoes stand out because they come in modern, on-trend styles. From the rainproof Boardwalk slip-ons for summer to the snow-proof Alta High Top for winter, Vessi offers stylish waterproof travel footwear for every season. I even find my Low Top Stormbursts, with their chunky retro athletic sneaker vibe, look great with shorts.

Vessi Waterproof Performance: Did They Hold Up?
We put our Vessi shoes to the test on a road trip where a foggy morning quickly turned into a rainy day. Stepping out of the car, we immediately noticed the magic of waterproof travel shoes in action: rain was falling all around us, yet our feet remained completely dry.
This consistent waterproof performance continues to impress me. Vessi shoes have boosted my confidence to explore and walk around even in inclement weather. Instead of dodging puddles, I now confidently stride right through them. Vessi shoes are truly 100% waterproof, and my feet have never gotten wet while wearing them, making them reliable waterproof travel companions.

In these photos taken in a rain puddle, you can see water beading up on the waterproof material of my Weekend Sneakers. I even tried to capture splashes, but the shoes repel water so effectively that it was nearly impossible!

Key Features and Functionality of Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes
The most remarkable feature of Vessi shoes is undoubtedly their waterproofing. It genuinely works, providing reliable protection in wet conditions.
During my travels, these waterproof travel shoes have allowed me to explore destinations without worrying about rain interrupting my plans or dealing with the inconvenience of drying soaked shoes. Best of all, I can leave my bulky rain boots at home. Traditional rain boots are impractical for travel – they take up too much space in luggage and are often too heavy for extended walking. Vessi shoes are the modern, travel-friendly alternative, offering the waterproof protection of rain boots with the style and comfort of sneakers.

Most Vessi styles I’ve tried are also surprisingly lightweight. The Weekend Chelsea, for both Dan and me, has proven to be a lightweight and packable waterproof travel shoe. They nest easily together, taking up minimal space in a suitcase. For bulkier styles like the Stormburst or Alta High Top, especially for hiking or snowy trips, wearing them during travel rather than packing might be more convenient.

Comfort Assessment of Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes
Let’s talk honestly about comfort. As someone with flat feet, particularly my right foot being flatter than my left, I often experience discomfort and slight pain when walking for extended periods without adequate arch support.
The Weekend Chelsea shoes function excellently as waterproof travel shoes, comparable to rain boots in their protection. However, I wouldn’t choose them for extensive city walking, like exploring a European city for 8 miles in a day. I learned this lesson firsthand after experiencing foot ache wearing thinner shoes in Dublin.

That being said, if you don’t have flat feet, you’ll likely find most Vessi styles comfortable for everyday wear and travel. For those who need more arch support, like myself, I recommend the Stormburst Low Top shoe. This model was recommended to me as the Vessi shoe offering the most arch support and structure.

And it’s true: I hiked in the Stormburst Low Tops and found them quite comfortable (though they are a bit bottom-heavy due to the sturdy, supportive sole combined with the lightweight knit upper).
Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoe Sizing and Fit Experience
In recent years, my shoe size seems to have increased by half a size. I often purchase sneakers in size 6.5. Here’s where Vessi’s sizing can be a bit tricky, as they only offer full sizes, no half sizes.

Here’s my sizing experience: For my first Vessi shoes (Weekend Chelsea), I ordered a Women’s 7. They were huge! I initially wondered if they were designed to run large. I exchanged them for a size 6, and those became my regularly worn Vessi shoes.
For the Stormburst shoe, size 6 was also a bit roomy. The Alta High Top also runs large; a size 6 fits me well. Dan found the men’s Alta High Top to be true to size, wearing his usual size 10. The Weekend Sneaker, however, fit perfectly in a size 6! In general, Vessi shoes tend to run large, but sizing can vary between styles.
Without half sizes available for many models, you might need to try two different sizes to find your preferred fit when choosing waterproof travel shoes.

Update: Vessi Now Offers Half Sizes
One limitation I noticed with Vessi was their initial lack of half sizes. However, in recent months, they’ve introduced half sizes in select styles, which I was eager to try.
I got the Vessi Tidal Sneaker for Women. It’s fully waterproof and has a trendy, 90s-inspired chunky sneaker design. I like pairing them with sweatpants, joggers, or relaxed jeans for a fashionable look. These are great waterproof travel sneakers that combine style and practicality.

But how was the fit with the half size? Surprisingly, they felt a bit small! Considering myself a true Women’s 6.5 now, the Tidal sneakers in 6.5 felt slightly tight, even with thin socks.
Despite the slight tightness, it’s great to know that a size 7 is an option if needed. Interestingly, I wear a size 6 in most Vessi styles, except for the Courtside, where I needed a 7. Finding the perfect Vessi fit is still an ongoing journey!

My Recommendation: Are Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes Worth It?
Vessi shoes are the first ones I reach for when packing for a trip with even a slight chance of rain. They are truly game-changing waterproof travel shoes.
One of my favorite aspects of Vessi shoes, particularly the Weekend Chelsea, is their versatility. They can double as stylish “relaxed boots” suitable for dinner or evenings out, especially when paired with jeans or a dress. They are essentially casual, pull-on boots that are both fashionable and functional – and, of course, waterproof.
Dan also wears his Weekend Chelsea shoes frequently, and he owns them in black as well. We’ve started a Vessi collection: I use the Stormburst Low Top sneakers for hiking and when I need extra stability, and the Alta High Tops for winter and snowy trips. Dan has the Alta High Tops too.

Whenever I receive compliments on my Vessi shoes, I always add, “Thank you, and also – they’re rainproof!” I even enjoy demonstrating their waterproof capability by pouring water on them.
In conclusion, Vessi waterproof travel shoes have simplified my packing process, allowing me to confidently prepare for any weather conditions with a single pair of stylish and protective shoes. They eliminate the “what ifs” of weather during travel.

Exploring Vessi Accessories and Apparel
Beyond shoes, I also tested the Vessi Overcast rain jacket and the Vessi Shoreline Belt Bag to evaluate the waterproofing of their other items.
I wore both during a heavy downpour while grocery shopping and was happy to find that they both lived up to the waterproof hype, keeping me completely dry. The Vessi Overcast Jacket is also lined with fleece, making it a great cool-weather rain jacket, perfect for colder trips.

Helpful Tip: My only minor critique of the jacket is that it runs slightly large. As a true-to-size XS, the XS jacket was a bit long in the arms and roomy in the torso. Consider this when ordering; you might want to order two sizes to ensure the best fit.
Are Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes a Good Value?
If you need lightweight waterproof shoes for travel, Vessi is an excellent choice. I even list them as one of the best travel products for backpacking trips because unpredictable weather is common on extended backpacking adventures.
Rain boots often cost the same or more than Vessi shoes but lack their travel-friendly features. Rain boots are bulky, difficult to pack, and generally not ideal for extensive walking, especially if you’re trying to pack light.
Waterproof travel shoes like Vessi are a worthwhile investment and one of my favorite travel discoveries.
Finding Vessi Waterproof Travel Shoes on Sale
Looking for a deal on Vessi shoes? The Vessi website has a dedicated Sale section where you can find discounted Vessi shoes and gear.
The Vessi sale page features various deals, from limited-edition color collections and discontinued items to narrow-fit sizing in popular styles, less common styles, and apparel.
In fact, the Vessi sale page is where I first learned that select Vessi shoes are available in narrow fits – something I might have liked to try myself! If you’re looking to save money on your first pair of Vessi waterproof travel shoes, check out their sale section.
My Shoe Philosophy for Travel: Versatility is Key
As mentioned earlier, choosing shoes for travel can be challenging. I often desire dressier flats for evenings, sturdy hiking shoes for trails, comfortable sneakers for city exploration, and sandals for warmer climates.

While Vessi shoes don’t yet cover the sandal category, they effectively address multiple footwear needs in one. If I’m traveling to a destination with a rainy season or where midday showers are typical, having my Vessi shoes as my primary or only pair of shoes is sufficient.
Styles like the Weekend Sneaker are stylish and versatile enough to pair with everything from sweatpants to dresses, while the Stormburst Low Top is suitable for hiking yet still looks great with jeans and shorts. Vessi waterproof travel shoes offer the perfect blend of style, comfort, and weather protection for the modern traveler.
