What Documents Do I Need to Travel to Hawaii? A Comprehensive Guide

Planning a trip to the beautiful Hawaiian Islands? Ensuring you have the correct documents is crucial for a smooth and stress-free journey. This guide outlines the necessary documentation for both domestic and international travel to Hawaii.

Domestic Travel to Hawaii

If you’re traveling to or from Hawaii, or between the Hawaiian Islands, from within the United States, the requirements are similar to any other domestic U.S. flight. Generally, a valid government-issued photo ID is sufficient. The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) provides a comprehensive list of accepted forms of identification on their TSA website.

REAL ID Reminder: Beginning May 7, 2025, the TSA will require state driver’s licenses to be REAL ID compliant. Make sure your driver’s license has a star marking or the word “enhanced” at the top, indicating it meets REAL ID requirements. Even with TSA PreCheck, a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID will be necessary after this date. You can find more information and state-specific details on obtaining a REAL ID on the DHS REAL ID website.

Traveling with Children: Children and teenagers under 18 traveling with an adult companion with a valid ID typically don’t need their own ID. However, it’s advisable for them to carry some form of identification, such as a school ID card. If you’re traveling with a lap infant, bringing a copy of the birth certificate as proof of age is recommended.

International Travel to Hawaii (Connecting Flights)
