Instead, Anthropic is focusing on teaching its AI “general computer skills.” This broader approach enables the AI travel agent to utilize a wide range of existing software and online tools designed for human users. According to Anthropic, this nascent technology has the potential to automate repetitive processes, aid in software development and testing, and tackle open-ended tasks like in-depth research. Currently in beta, the feature is available for developers to test and provide feedback, even with acknowledged bugs in this early stage.

The financial backing of Anthropic underscores its potential impact. The company is reportedly in discussions to raise capital at a valuation between $30 billion and $40 billion, having already secured nearly $8 billion at an $18.4 billion valuation. This significant investment reflects the industry’s belief in the transformative power of AI, especially in applications like AI travel agents.

How an AI Travel Agent Could Revolutionize Travel Booking

Imagine an AI travel agent capable of handling all the tedious aspects of travel planning. This technology promises to eliminate the friction associated with manually searching for options, comparing prices across multiple platforms, and making reservations. As AI capabilities advance, travelers might increasingly bypass traditional online travel agencies (OTAs) like Booking.com. Instead, they could rely on AI travel agents to scour the internet for the best deals and tailor-made itineraries based on their preferences.

Alex Bainbridge, CEO of Autoura, a robotaxi tour operator and AI-powered tour guide platform provider, had the opportunity to test a developer demo of Anthropic’s AI travel agent. He shared his experience in a LinkedIn post, detailing how he instructed the AI to find and book a tour in Rome through GetYourGuide.

Bainbridge aimed to assess if the AI could truly browse the web, select products based on user preferences, and complete bookings without human intervention. While he noted some initial glitches, he was impressed with the technology’s potential, especially considering it was only day one. His conclusion was clear: “AI agents will be the new web user experience,” and this could present “big trouble” for traditional OTAs.

Demonstrating the Capabilities: An AI-Powered San Francisco Itinerary

To illustrate the functionality of their AI travel agent, Anthropic provided a demonstration featuring a researcher using a Macbook computer. The AI was tasked with planning a sunrise experience at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The prompt given to the AI travel agent was: “My friend is coming to San Francisco and I want to watch the sunrise with him at the Golden Gate Bridge tomorrow morning. We’ll be coming from Pacific Heights. Could you find us a great viewing spot, check the drive time and sunrise time, then set up a calendar event that gives us enough time to get there?”

Upon receiving this prompt, the AI took control of the computer interface. Observers could watch as the AI travel agent moved the cursor, clicked on links, and typed text to fulfill the request. Simultaneously, a side window displayed a detailed, step-by-step description of the AI’s actions. These actions included:

  • Performing a Google search for optimal sunrise viewing locations near the Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Selecting and accessing a relevant blog post from the search results.
  • Analyzing the blog content to identify Battery Spencer as the recommended viewpoint.
  • Launching the Apple Maps desktop application.
  • Inputting and executing a directions search from Pacific Heights to Battery Spencer, noting a 21-minute drive time.
  • Opening a new Chrome browser tab.
  • Conducting a Google search to ascertain the sunrise time for the following day, which was 7:22 a.m.
  • Accessing the Apple Calendar desktop application.
  • Creating a calendar event scheduled for 7:22 a.m., lasting one hour.
  • Adding a descriptive note to the calendar event: “Leave Pacific Heights by 6:45 a.m. to arrive with time to park and set up before sunrise. Drive time is approximately 20 minutes to Battery Spencer. Bring warm layers as it can be chilly in the morning.”

This demo effectively showcased the AI travel agent’s ability to understand a complex, multi-step request, navigate various online resources and desktop applications, and execute tasks autonomously to deliver a comprehensive travel plan.
